To import your SIM contacts, just do the following:
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendar
- Scroll down to the Contacts section and tap on Import SIM Contacts
That's all to it. Do take note that importing your contacts from the SIM card might take some time. If my memory serves me correctly, I took like 1-2 minutes just to import 10 contacts (new SIM card) based on the 2.02 firmware. I'm not sure if there is any improvements for the new v2.1 firmware. I recommend that you do it when your iPhone 3G is plugged in. :)
One thing that I do know is that the iPhone 3G is unable to store contact details directly to the SIM card. Therefore, all your contacts, old or new, will be in the phone memory.

OMG! I wish I would have read this like 1 hour ago. I just hacked up my 3g to download and run SIMport. lol
Nice post
thanks man!! it's a really useful info! :)
Nope, you are wrong. The import function on the new 2.0+ iphones are brutal! it only imported 3 of my 200+ contacts
Did it say it was completed? I have imported definitely more than 3 contacts but it took quite some time, even though I have less than 20 contacts in my SIM card. I only tried the import under the 2.02 firmware version.
That was why I suggest that importing the contacts when the iPhone 3G is plugged in might result in a faster import time.
I came across this when trying to find a solution to my problem. I've got about 100 SIM contacts but my iPhone 3G only imports 38, no matter what I do and how often I use the "import SIM contacts" feature.
Did anyone find a solution yet? I'm struggling here, would like to use my new iPhone but without my contacts...?
It is weird. Do not understand why some encounter this problem, and some don't.
Another way is to transfer your contacts into your PC, and sync it with the iPhone.
You have done a great job i imported the contacts and two dayes later i reset my mobile and lost my contacts, now i want to imports my contact from sim but i forgot how to do it and looked in to many forums but all were saying that there is no way from iphone you need a software.
at last i found your forum and now transferred the contacts . Thanks alot.
Glad to be of help... :)
Thanks man!!
It's a really useful info!

My friend and I were recently discussing about how technology has become so integrated in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.
I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further develops, the possibility of downloading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about every once in a while.

legend, cheers dude
Hello all, this importing SIM contacts is not that straight fwd! My backlighting failed so Apple gave me a new ph. I imported the SIM Ok using the method shown but the contacts were all over the place; Zs in the As & everything in between so I synced with iTunes which I knew had only one contact. Now when I try to import the SIM again (as higgledy piggeldy contacts are better than none!), it only gives me 2 options; "from My PC" or "Exchange", seems the actual SIM is not an option now!
Any ideas? Tks, MarkK
Hi. I am not sure if there are any changes to the iPhone firmware since then but you can try the same steps and ensure that
1) Your data cellular is off
2) You have unplugged your iPhone from the desktop/laptop.
I'm just guessing wildly because I do not think many has encountered your problem. This is the first time I've heard of it.
Did you use the iPhone Import your Contacts feature? Do not use the iTunes.
